Visual search in scenes

Jeremy Wolfe

Visual Attention Lab, Brigham and Women's Hospital

Whenever I tell 'civilians' what I do, I say I work on visual search, "the problem of finding what you are looking for in a world full of distracting objects". Then I go off and do research where observers look for Ts among Ls or big red vertical lines among other colored and oriented bars. Every now and again, I try to bridge the gap between stimuli that are tractable in the lab and stimuli that are interesting in the world. In this INFORMAL talk, I will discuss our latest efforts in this area. What can we learn from search through stacks of cubes and carefully labeled photographs?"
